The narrative
Market reality
Adoption is broad but shallow: 88% of organizations use agents somewhere, but only 39% report any bottom-line impact and just 6% are high performers. The gap between experimentation and production is where most projects stall.
Operational gap
62% of organizations are experimenting with agents, but only 23% are scaling them beyond pilots (McKinsey, 2025). 50%+ of agent projects are abandoned after proof of concept (Gartner, 2026).
Trust gap
69% say security concerns are slowing their autonomous agent adoption. Only 24% of organizations can control agent actions with proper guardrails (Cisco, 2025), and 97% of organizations that reported an agent-related breach lacked proper access controls (IBM, 2025).
Business value
Independent research shows the upside when projects do reach production: companies expect an average 171% ROI from autonomous agents that ship - roughly 3x traditional automation (PagerDuty, 2025) - and 66% of organizations already report productivity and efficiency gains from enterprise agents (Deloitte, 2026). Across roughly 60% of occupations, at least 30% of activities could be automated with current technology (McKinsey Global Institute).
